A small briefing for the Watermill of Aris beach

In Ikaria, an island rich in waterways, due to the extensive mountainous volumes and the high altitude slopes, the dynamic energy of the water was totally usable from ancient times. Here one can meet a large number of watermills in relation to the size of the island. Simple buildings, built with great craftsmanship and passion next to rivers and ravines. Harmonizing the mills with the usually magnificent vegetation landscape is amazing. The use of materials (stones, woods, etc.) as a rule from the surrounding area shows respect for the environment, mainly by instinct. The great contradiction with the current situation should be of particular concern to us.

Today, there is no watermill in operation. The operation of some maintained until the 1950s according to earlier testimonies. As part of the research we conducted with the Environmental Education Program, we visited most of them.

Our aim was to investigate similarities and differences in parts, their operation and various historical and other elements, to the extent of the potential of a group of pupils in a small school. At first we searched for and found important information from the web for the first elemental information. Then with our guns camcorders, cameras and exploration, we managed to make an important, in our opinion, recording of these monuments that we consider to be historical and mainly didactic.
